National Philanthropy Day, November 15th
By Christie Renner

Sunday, November 15th is National Philanthropy Day. Sponsored by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, this day recognizes the role of philanthropy in creating a more peaceful and sustainable world. Whether working on the local, national, or international scale, charitable organizations are involved in a wide range of activities, from education to health care to protecting the environment.

While reflecting on philanthropic giving and charitable contributions, it’s worth recognizing some important industry trends. While charitable giving typically slumps in a recession, fundraisers are finding new and creative ways to reach potential donors. As membership to social media platforms (e.g. Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter) increases exponentially, more links to non-profit websites and campaigns are being disseminated virally through such outlets.

In his book, CauseWired: Plugging In, Getting Involved, Changing the World, Tom Watson discusses this new generation of internet-savvy givers and how the web is revolutionizing the philanthropic world. With a few mouse clicks, donors can learn about giving opportunities and make donations online. To protect yourself, we advise clients to make sure a website is official and secure before entering any personal information.

First Affirmative offers a program that combines web-tools with philanthropy. Through First Affirmative, you can set up a personal Donor Advised Fund (DAF), allowing you to use ethical investment strategies to manage your philanthropic dollars. Once your FAFN Giving Fund is established, you can choose when and where to make grants from your fund. While waiting to be directed to deserving charities, your fund is invested responsibly, working to make money and make a difference.

First Affirmative clients that have set up a Giving Fund can access their fund online. For current clients wanting to learn more, please contact your network advisor. If you are a prospective client interested in speaking with one of our financial advisors, please visit the Find an Advisor area of our website.
